A valuable experiment

I am taking an online professional development course through the continuing education department of my graduate alma mater, Simmons College (where I got my Master's of Library and Information Science) on Blogging and I'm really excited about setting aside a month to delve into the issues and details surrounding this method of web publishing. As a librarian in a high school, I'm very interested in taking the website of Kirby Library and finally developing it into an interactive, ever-changing website that will be a place people want to go and not just have to go to get the necessary research links. (Note: do NOT look at anything other than the Students section as the other sections are totally undeveloped!)

At the moment I'm collecting questions about blogs that I want to answer in the course of the month and also collecting URLs of weblogs that I think look great and are well organized so I can analyze what it is about them that I like and want to emulate. I also plan on presenting all this research to my wonderful Library Advisory Board (18 enthusiastic students who love the library) and get their feedback and "in the trenches" perspective. Stay tuned!!

Hi Courtney,

Love your blog so far...sounds like your students are lucky to have such a "sassy" librarian.

I'm a current Simmons GSLIS student, so I haven't had much time to put into my blog yet (last class today) but plan on doing some work on it the rest of this week. All I did yesterday was read read read, but I aspire to putting up something as polished as you've got so far.

Thanks so much, Laura, for commenting on my blog!!! It's nice to speak with a current Simmons student - I love my job but really miss New England and would love to take some of the location classes offered in the summer. Oh, well! This is something I've wanted to do for a while and I knew I'd have to take a class to force myself to set aside the time to finally work on blogging rather than just reading about it and saying, "I really should do that...".

I can't wait to see your blog!
Courtney :-)

Well, mine's barely anything at this point...Especially compared to yours, but here it is:
http://bassetpress.blogspot.com/

I'm trying to take an onsite workshop at Simmons also this summer, before the two regular (2 credit) classes I'm taking in July.

I'm going for the Reader's Advisory workshop on Sat. June 4...I just have to find someone to work for me at the library. What are you trying for?

Sounds like we took this workshop for the same reason. I could probably have done the searching around on my own, but it's nice to have a guided tour from Scot, and knowing that I've signed up and mailed a check, I'll spend more time and effort on it instead of saying "I don't have time for this right now!" Of course, I don't have time for this right now, but I'm giving it a shot anyway. So wish me luck on spiffing up my blog.
